How will SKUK International Centre’s work towards guaranteeing standards?

• In this day and age there are many organizations that provide standards and qualifications for Sea Kayaking Guides and Coaches
• SKUK have devised a matrix of qualifications. SKUK assessors will need to hold the relevant qualifications that are awarded by any of the following.
  
  • British Canoeing
  • American Canoe Association
  • E.P.P
  • ISKGA

• Coaches need to be approved and endorsed by the relevant governing body at the time of the training & assessment course. On a successful completion of the training or assessment course our approved SKUK International Center’s will issue the certificates. These Certificates should be accepted by all our approved International Centre’s

All SKUK guides and Coaches are first and foremost experienced. Experience in the field is what separates Coaches and gives you the added benefit of what works in certain situation, tried and proven even if its not what the academics say!

The working day:
Coaches are expected to meet all clients at 0930hrs Day two – Day five. On day one meet 0900hrs in order to select kayaks and load the trailer.
Off the water between 1600-1630hrs
 
Coaches will need to meet the clients at 0900hrs on day one. Clients to check that they are happy with back rests, footrests and have a working skeg.
Trailer to hopefully be loaded by 1000hrs
 
Coaches to provide their own first aid kit and kayak repair kit.

SKUK personal skill awards

Our aim is to provide awards that can be obtained from any of the SKUK Expedition Centres. These awards will also help make sure that you have the personal skills required to undertake expeditions run by any of our Expedition Centres.

Tidal Races and Rough Water

Be prepared to get wet! We will spend plenty of time both in and on the waves!

Learn or improve your rough water rescues, boat repairs and bad weather emergency landings.

If you have a VHF and are licenced to use it - bring it with you.

We can include radio practice as well.

Paddle power

A performance Paddling Clinic designed to add some energy efficient speed and power to your paddling to ensure you enjoy your days on the water.

Are you always struggling at the back of the group and having problems keeping up?
Are you fed up of reaching the group just as they finish their break and start to paddle off again?
This Performance Paddling 'Paddle Power' course may be the answer to your problems.

We look at all the elements of your paddling and kayak set-up.

Discover some paddling techniques and tricks of the trade to get some speed into your paddling and give you the edge without using up all of your energy.

This course specialises in showing you energy efficient paddling that will give you the power you need to keep at the top of the group and enjoy the scenery at the same time.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking (Novice)

This course is designed to introduce you to the exciting sport of sea kayaking.
The main emphasis is on having fun and learning the key fundamentals to enable you to get out on the water and progress. It is run out on the open sea but in sheltered conditions allowing you to improve quickly. We will look at the fundamental skills needed to safely kayak at sea, and the basic theoretical knowledge to decide where to kayak in safety.
Ratio: 1 instructor to 4 students.
This course is designed for anyone who is enthusiastic about trying sea kayaking. No prior experience is required - just a reasonable level of water confidence and a have-a-go attitude.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking (Master Class)

Advanced Seakayaking

Designed for paddlers who are at or around the BCU 4* standard (you do not need to hold a certificate!) You will have a competent roll and are happy paddling in moderate water conditions so we can introduce you and take you into the advanced water environment.

Open Water Navigation

This course is designed for those paddlers carrying out open water journeys including islands over 2 nautical miles offshore in areas of strong tidal movement of 3+ knots and/or including winds of up to force 5 and is suitable for those seeking their 5 star award sea.
Designed to complement the areas covered in the 5 star leader training.

The aim is to give the student the tools to enable them to plan and navigate effectively on open water journeys in advanced sea conditions. It should increase the knowledge and awareness of the paddler and therefore improve their seamanship. This will include the following aspects:
To interpret sources of relevant information including maps, charts, coastal pilots, tide tables and tidal stream atlases.
To apply the above relevant information in calculating vectors and negotiating open crossings and/or coastlines with no landing zones and/or tide races and overfalls.
To develop the necessary knowledge to navigate on the water using advanced pilotage techniques in poor visibility or hours of darkness.
